The name of “aunt” Upe was Guadalupe and for a long, long time, she carried the affectionate nickname “aunt.” Why? Because she lived more than a hundred years: some say 101, others 102… This was her house: welcome to the home of a long-lived woman.
Those were times to light oneself with a candle and to fetch water from the fountain. And when the work was done, the neighbors chatted. They reviewed their stories and remembered those who one day left in search of their fortune.
Some returned rich and improved the lives of their countrymen, such as Simón de Ágreda and Martínez de Cabezón, from San Román de Cameros, opposite Velilla.
He founded the San Román school and guaranteed free education in this environment more than 200 years ago.
The cameranos boast that among her grandparents and great-grandparents there was no illiterate person. The children of Velilla also went to this school and it is still open today.
Do you see the things that Tía Upe’s House can teach you?
Velilla, La Rioja, Spain
Velilla is a district of San Román de Cameros at 500mts, where there are the services of Restaurant, Bar, Playground, Public Swimming Pools (July and August) Medical Center (24h from Monday to Sunday)
Velilla is quiet, surrounded by Nature, where you can hear the silence.
How to get around the area
It is necessary to have a car to access Velilla, since there is no public transport.
It is a very small village, the car can be left on the street or outside the house.
There are only the accommodations, my house and some neighboring houses, which is very quiet, and although they have their exterior, the entire town is a large terrace in Nature, full of tranquility and silence.
